A most unusual request. A tweed kilt. Seen more often in Scotland than in the US. I appreciate being asked to make it. Something different and fun.
A view of Cathedral Street at Mulberry in Baltimore. Waiting at a red traffic signal, my eye was drawn to the flag. One favorite part of this painting is the traffic signal.

Painting number eight in my parking garage series; it is a nocturne. This is the view of the garage from the Jones Falls Expressway. Although this shows the top two floors, the garage is actually eight stories high.

The Cameron Highlanders regiment wears Cameron of Erracht tartan. Here it is shown pleated to stripe, as is proper for a regimental kilt. In 1961, the Camerons merged with the Seaforth Highlanders to form the Queen's Own Highlanders. I thought I would show the kilt stretched out to it's full length. It will wrap around and be buckled to fit.
Interesting that this plaid makes such a successful kilt. A plaid with no name - it's not a tartan. But it is woven in a traditional colorway: "weathered" - where the blues become slate, the greens become khaki and the blacks become a very soft brown-black, leaving the reds vibrant. In Scotland, such a fabric is known as a "fashion plaid".
This is the newest addition to my ongoing series of parking garages. This painting centers on the sign itself. I finally found one in which the background is brown, not blue. It is located at West Street and Taylor Avenue in Annapolis, Maryland.

This is a "kilted skirt" so-called since in Scotland a kilt is men's wear. Hand-stitched and pleated to the yellow stripe. Modern colorway.
Above is the last canvas in the White Cloth series. Perhaps not the final one, but nothing is on the easel at the moment.
I intended to paint the lovely pink/green/gray luminescence inside the conch, but when I turned it toward the light the beautiful red color appeared. This canvas is also more about the shadows cast by the shell onto the damask cloth.

The fourth in the white cloth series. Still showing the hemstitching in the cloth and very subtle damask patterns. I was so taken with the intense blue of the anemones this spring. I also tried my hand at the transparency of the petals.

I just finished hanging a show at the Md Federation of Art Gallery at 18 State Circle, in Annapolis, MD. Show is open March 2 - 13, reception is March 6, 2011, 3-5 pm. Come and visit! There are 12 artists showing work. Besides these paintings, there are 5 additional ones.
Today, March 13th, was take-down at the gallery. I am delighted to say that they sold three paintings for me. How very exciting!
I had a chance to visit my painting this weekend. This couple will get to visit Le Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh shortly. What fun! I hope they photograph themselves there.
Irish tartans are newcomers in the kilt world. There is a tartan for every Irish county as well as Irish National Tartan. I think the county tartans are beautiful. Custom made kilt (they all are) for a young lawyer in Manhattan. Pleated to sett.
A study of DaVinci's Ginevra diBenci, the original is located in the National Gallery in Washington, DC. This project was incredibly difficult ~ of course! It's a DaVinci! It is a good and faithful copy.
